Benzodiazepiny są szeroko stosowanymi lekami uspokajającymi. Po wprowadzeniu na rynek w roku 1960 już w latach 70. zastąpiły większość stosowanych wcześniej barbituranów. Stało się tak głównie z uwagi na ich mniejszą toksyczność oraz niższy potencjał uzależniający. Pozostają jedną z bardziej skutecznych form leczenia zaburzeń lękowych, zwłaszcza w pierwszych czterech tygodniach leczenia lekami z grupy inhibitorów wychwytu zwrotnego serotoniny (SSRI), które powinny być leczeniem z wyboru w omawianym wskazaniu według NICE (brytyjski National Instute for Health and Care Excellence).
W pracy tej przedstawiono patofizjologię zaburzeń lękowych, wyjaśniono wpływ benzodiazepin na receptor GABA oraz porównano niektóre z leków w odniesieniu do badań klinicznych przeprowadzanych w różnych rodzajach zaburzeń lękowych. Omówiono także zjawisko tolerancji oraz ryzyko zależności i uzależnienia wraz z krótką charakterystyką działań niepożądanych i zespołu odstawiennego. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono alprazolamowi, lorazepamowi oraz bromazepamowi, uwzględniając ich wskazania kliniczne i zakresy dawek.
Benzodiazepiny zaczęły być szeroko używane przez lekarzy nie tylko z powodu ich szybkiego działania przeciwlękowego, ale także z powodu ich działania przeciwdrgawkowego, nasennego i miorelaksacyjnego.
